...now sleep forever

"red" was born to turkish defectors who fled the ottoman empire and made a home for themselves in rouen, in the french empire. tragedy befalls the family when both of "red's" parents' lives were taken by the bubonic plague, leaving their infant daughter to fend for herself in rouen slums.

her days were spent fighting for her life, trying to secure food for herself and trying to defend herself from slumlords and nobles who would abuse her. why was she here? what was she even fighting for? it was pure chance that she would one day encounter a man who would change the trajectory of her life forever. while returning to the place where she slept, she bumped into a man in noble clothes who seemed to be outrunning the guards. wanting to spite the guards, she misdirected them when asked where the man went, and inadvertently saved this noble's life. she hadn't thought much of her actions, which is why it struck her as particularly odd that he was looking at her in a way that no one else had looked at her before. the man's name was raphael. and it was only when he asked her for her own that she came up with her name: amy.

for the next three years, amy traveled with raphael as the two were on the run. needing to outrun guards and slumlords and bird of passage assassins, raphael decided he wanted amy to know how to defend herself. upon entering spain, amy was introduced to the art of swordfighting. she was a quick learner, and her teacher praised her for her natural abilities and intuition. it was almost as though she could predict her opponents' next moves.

in the year 1586, raphael and amy found themselves back in france, now in the south. raphael had come to serve lord dumas and amy was allowed to live the life of a noblewoman. amy was grateful for all raphael had done for her but she wondered if he realized that none of this nobility or wealth mattered to her. all she cared about was that they were together. after a visit from a strange man called azwel, lord dumas had died.

amy learned that raphael had poisoned him after dumas had demanded that raphael give amy up if he wanted to become dumas's heir. from then on, raphael was the lord of the estate and amy had officially become his daughter, however from then on she got to see less and less of raphael. he was always either away or locked up in his study. even when she interacted with him, it didn't feel like he was all there. something strange was afoot.

"be a good girl, i'll be back in a while." those were the last words to her, but amy had to ponder them for a moment. even the most dutiful fledgling takes flight when the longing for its parents grows too strong. a single butterfly was being tossed about on the cold night winds like a lonely star drifting far from heaven; like a soul freed from all its burdens. silently, with all her feelings tucked away where none could read them, amy pushed open the door, in search of her missing father.

in an abandoned ravaged encampment, a young woman with silver hair awoke on the ground with nothing but a strange glowing orb clutched to her chest and no memories. she didn't have enough time to wonder where the orb came from or who she was though, for a pack of vicious wolves appeared, all staring at her with hunger in their eyes. within an instant, the orb came to life and flew at them, taking them all out before returning to her. believing this orb to be the key to her unknown origins, the woman, viola, decided she would keep it close.

she traveled nomadically, making a living by telling people their fortunes. how ironic that she could see the fortunes and souls of others but could not read her own. however this job was dangerous, for there were times when telling the truth would anger people. she didn't care. she lacked the empathy it took to want to tell them what they wanted to hear. this would often result in assault, accusations of witchcraft, and attempts on her life.

it was one of these encounters that led her to meet zwei, who defended and vouched for her when a group of angry villagers were preparing to run her out. the two began to travel together from that moment. zwei had said they were kindred spirits, and that they should look out for one another. they traveled nomadically, protecting each other from assassins until one day they found themselves at the schwarzwind citadel. having been saved by siegfried schtauffen from assassins, the two became mercenaries working under him in the fight against the malfested
